With Beginner Readers in Mind

What a wonderful day! I’m excited to share the freebie I found and downloaded today. A reader written for preschoolers, first graders and struggling readers. What do I like? First of all, the author, Melinda Thompson, was a mother determined to help her struggling reader, and she used researched-based reading principles and experts to create her books. I have downloaded Budding Reader, Set 1: Cat and Rat, which consist of 10 short books. The author describes it best, “Previewing a book dramatically improves reading comprehension, so Book 1 in each set is a wordless picture book which introduces the story through colorful illustrations. Repetition aids brain development, so the story is retold in Books 2-10 with an ever-expanding vocabulary. By repeating words and gradually adding new ones, Budding Reader eBooks help new readers (even reluctant ones) experience success from the very start.”

Some Title I teachers and tutors know some students become weary of reading the same story in-spite of proven research. However, I believe the Budding Reader series could hold young readers attention because each book introduces new words to challenge and excite them as they realize they are actually reading. I can’t wait to try it out!

Other books in the series

•Set 2: Wit and Kit (Short i; 17 words) •Set 3: Bugs (Short u; 18 words) •Set 4: Hop! (Short o; 18 words) •Set 5: Hens (Short e; 22 words)
